Reasons to Use an Interpreter

Accuracy
Selected for their fluency and linguistic competence, our interpreters are trained to interpret accurately and faithfully.

Training
Our interpreters complete an extensive province-wide training program based on rigorous provincial standards, curriculum and testing. As well, skills and knowledge are updated through ongoing professional development.

Impartiality
Our interpreters are trained NOT to take sides or let their own values, beliefs and opinions interfere with communication. Untrained interpreters may withhold, filter, add or distort information.

Confidentiality
Our interpreters maintain absolute confidentiality about everything pertaining to an interpretation assignment.

Professionalism
Our interpreters adhere to a strict code of ethics developed and approved provincially. They avoid conflicts of interest and stay within the limits of their role.

Convenience
Easy access to trained interpreters, covering 50 languages available 24 hours a day – 7 days a week. Just call! Interpreters can provide face-to-face, telephone, message-relay or group interpretation.

Liability
Failing to provide language interpretation in the delivery of services where it is necessary for effective communication poses a liability for health care providers. Having an interpreter can help in the avoidance of issues of “informed” consent that can be contested if a message was not clearly understood. Interpreting works towards and supports better patient-centered care and improved outcomes. If the minimal cost of providing interpretation is not approved, funds should be set aside for settlements and civil judgments. Equality of service must be considered.

Please remember that the role of the interpreter is to facilitate language and not to be an advocate, assistant, or secretary of the service provider. Please do not ask an interpreter to step outside of this professional role.
